September 28, 2021 (New York, NY) – Last Friday, more than 100 legal professionals and law students joined the conversation on the core civil rights issues facing Sikhs and other minority groups since 9/11 during the Sikh Coalition’s first-ever virtual legal conference–Realizing Justice For All–hosted in partnership with law firms Winston & Strawn LLP and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

Through the conference, participants learned from leaders, activists, and national experts on topics including combating discrimination and uplifting solidarity based on the intersectionality of race, religion, and class; understanding immigration challenges and helping attorneys better represent clients seeking asylum; and whether the justice system adequately addresses bias crimes in a way that is in fact just.

“Two decades after 9/11, Sikhs and other minority groups still face ongoing challenges at every turn because of their faith,” said Amrith Kaur Aakre, Sikh Coalition Legal Director. “As our organization approaches a milestone 20-year anniversary, we are grateful to everyone who joined and participated in this conference and has committed to helping us make progress for the next 20 years.”

The Sikh Coalition was founded in 2001 in response to a torrent of discrimination and hate-driven violence against Sikh Americans throughout the United States. Two decades later, we continue working in the community, courtroom, classroom, and halls of Congress to ensure Sikhs and other minorities can practice their faith fearlessly.
